Confederates under General John Bell Hood defending the Confederate stronghold of Atlanta, Georgia made a third attempt to break General Sherman’s  hold on Atlanta.  The battle was part of the Atlanta Campaign also known as the Battle of Ezra Church.

William Lowndes Yancey Law Office

On July 27th, 1863. Confederate William Lowndes Yancey died of kidney disease in Montgomery, Alabama . Yancey passed away at the age of 48. The William Lowndes Yancey Law Office in Montgomery, Alabama, was designated a National Historic Landmark of the United States in 1973. Due to unauthorized interior renovations, it was later de-designated, but it remains listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
