General George Stoneman was sent by General William Tecumseh.  Stoneman’s goal was to tear up railroad tracks and wreak whatever havoc on any transportation system he could.  He was directed toward Macon. This is known as Stoneman’s Raid.

The U.S. Congress passed the Crittenden-Johnson Resolution. The resolution declared that the war was being waged for the reunion of the states and not to interfere with the institutions of the South.
